The starting zone – getting started

Goal: level 4, one enemy at a time.

  • The quests in your race's starting zone (see the race box). Pick up several quests in the same area before heading back.
  • Smite to pull enemies; when your mana is low, melee or use a wand if you have one.
  • Level 4: Shadow Word: Pain. On very weak enemies the DoT won't finish ticking – skip it then.
  • Sell grey loot. Keep cloth if you want First Aid or Tailoring.

The full guide

Goal: reach level 60 solo as a Gnome Priest (Alliance), safely and with as little time as possible spent sitting and drinking. The guide explains both what you do and why.

Version note: talents and ability levels are checked against client data 1.60.1.70755 (the site's talent and ability data). Quests and zones are not verified on live. The beta had a level cap of 30, so everything above 30 is theory – nobody has published a play-tested 41–60 path for Forever. See Sources and quality.

Short version

Read this in 60 seconds

  1. Get a wand early. Novice's Practice Wand (level 1), Lesser Magic Wand (level 5), Greater Magic Wand (level 13). Buy one or have an Enchanter make it – you do not need to take Enchanting yourself.
  2. Level 10–11: two points in Wand Specialization (+25% wand damage).
  3. Level 12–16: Spirit Tap 5/5 – much more mana regen after every kill.
  4. The basic loop: buff → pick one enemy → Shadow Word: Pain if the enemy lives long enough for the DoT (damage over time) to tick → finish with the wand → move on while your mana refills.
  5. Level 20: Devouring Plague and Fear Ward from the trainer. Plague on tough targets, not on every weak mob.
  6. Level 22: in this build Mind Flay comes from the talent tree, not from the trainer.
  7. Level 32: Shadow Word: Death – if the target survives, you take damage equal to 30% of your max health (client data 1.60.1.70755). Only use it when the target will definitely die.
  8. Level 40: without a respec you are 2/0/29 and get Shadowform at 42. Want Shadowform right at 40? Respec to 0/0/31.
  9. Level 42–60: in Shadowform, Shadow spells cost 50% less mana. The wand becomes a backup, not your main weapon. Leave the form when you need to heal yourself.

Two strategies – pick the right goal

Strategy Talents at 40 Pro Con For you?
A. Shadow + Wand without respec 2/0/29 (9/0/42 at 60) Strong from early levels, clear playstyle, no rebuild Shadowform only at 42 Recommended
B. Shadow + Wand → respec at 40 0/0/31 after respec Wand benefits 10–39, Shadowform right at 40 Loses Wand Specialization, costs a respec If level 40 is a clear goal
C. Discipline → Shadow respec at 40 Discipline-leaning → 0/0/31 More shields and healing, good in dungeons Not shown to be faster solo; different rotation If you heal a lot

Why A: you mostly play solo and want a simple loop you can repeat. Wand + Spirit Tap is a strong early combination. There are no published, controlled 1–60 tests showing whether A, B or C is fastest in Forever – the sources recommend different paths.

Note: in Shadowform you cannot use regular healing spells. Leave the form when you need to heal yourself properly.

Your race as a Priest – what it gives you

The guide is written for a Gnome, but the build works for every race that can be a Priest (Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Gnome, Undead, Troll). Each race has its own racials and two race-specific Priest abilities (level 10 and 20); the boxes below and in the level plan show what applies to your race. Values from client data 1.60.1.70755.

How your Priest works in practice

Your resource is not just mana – it is time

An expensive pull (drawing an enemy to you) can kill the enemy three seconds faster but then cost ten seconds of drinking to get the mana back. The best leveling pace is not always the highest damage per second in the fight itself.

Three situations:

  • Green pull: one enemy at or below your level, plenty of room. DoT if it has time to tick, finish with the wand. Save mana for the next enemy.
  • Yellow pull: two enemies, a caster (an enemy that casts spells), a cramped spot or a hard escape. Shield before contact, be ready to heal.
  • Red pull: three or more, an elite (a stronger enemy with a dragon frame), a higher level or low mana. Back off, use Psychic Scream (or your race's emergency button), run. Surviving is faster than a corpse run (running back to your body as a ghost).

The five-second rule – why the wand is so strong

In Classic, Spirit-based mana regen does not fully resume until five seconds after your last mana spell (assumed from Classic – verify in game in Forever). DoT + wand therefore creates natural regen windows. In Forever the Spirit Tap tooltip also says that 50% of your mana regen continues while casting during the buff.

Practical rule: don't cast an extra Mind Blast just because it is ready. Cast it when it saves time without creating another drink break. After Shadowform (42) the balance shifts: spells get cheaper and Mind Blast on cooldown pays off more often.

Wand plan

DPS according to the site's item database (client data 1.60.1.70755).

Your level Wand DPS How to get it
1 Novice's Practice Wand 4.3 Enchanting 1, buy from players or the Auction House
5 Lesser Magic Wand 11.4 Enchanting 10, or buy. High priority
13 Greater Magic Wand 17.7 Enchanting 70, or buy. High priority
approx. 18–30 Gravestone Scepter 29 (Shadow) The quest "Blackfathom Villainy" – starts at 18 but in practice needs a higher level and a group in Blackfathom Deeps
26 / 30 Lesser Mystic Wand / Greater Mystic Wand 25.3 / 29.2 Enchanting 155/175 or buy
37 Twisted Nether Wand 34.2 (Shadow) Enchanting 185 (Forever recipe) or buy
43 Dreambough Wand 39.3 Enchanting 215 (Forever recipe) or buy
49 Lesser Eternal Wand 45.8 Enchanting 245 (Forever recipe) or buy
approx. 51 Wand of Biting Cold 64.1 Quest reward according to Warcraft Tavern (the warlock guide); level requirement missing from our data
55 Greater Eternal Wand / Brilliant Wand 53.4 / 59.9 Enchanting 275. Brilliant Wand is BoP – only if you have Enchanting yourself

Materials if you craft it yourself: Novice's Practice Wand = Simple Wood + Mote of Magic; Lesser Magic Wand = Simple Wood + Lesser Magic Essence; Greater Magic Wand = Simple Wood + 2 Lesser Magic Essence. You don't need Enchanting to use a crafted wand (except BoP wands).

Beta report: wands require you to stand still for a moment before the first shot. If the shot doesn't start: stop moving, face the target and try again.

Talent order 10–60 and why

One talent point per level from 10; 31 points at 40 and 51 at 60. The order is shown in the talent tree above and validated by the site.

Talent distribution at 60: 9/0/42 (Discipline 9: Wand Specialization 2, Twin Disciplines 5, Mental Strength 2; Shadow 42). Warcraft Tavern shows a 14/3/34 raid build for 60 – it is built for groups, not for solo leveling.

Respec to Shadowform at 40: talk to the Priest trainer and put 31 points in Shadow. Follow the tier requirements in the tree and take Vampiric Embrace before Shadowform. You lose +25% wand damage but get the form.

Legacy points: according to Method and Warcraft Tavern, the Legacy talent "Talented" can give talent points up to 5 levels earlier (full set at 55 instead of 60). If you have it: follow the same order, just earlier. Verify in game.

Optional tweak: Shadow Focus before Shadow Reach if you often fight enemies above your level and miss. Not shown to be faster.

Level-by-level plan

Level 1–4: the starting zone – getting started

Goal: level 4, one enemy at a time.

  • The quests in your race's starting zone (see the race box). Pick up several quests in the same area before heading back.
  • Smite to pull enemies; when your mana is low, melee or use a wand if you have one.
  • Level 4: Shadow Word: Pain. On very weak enemies the DoT won't finish ticking – skip it then.
  • Sell grey loot. Keep cloth if you want First Aid or Tailoring.

Level 5–9: the first wand

Goal: Lesser Magic Wand and getting used to the wand loop.

  • Buy the wand on the Auction House, from an Enchanter in your guild, or make it yourself.
  • Level 6: Power Word: Shield. Level 8: Renew and Fade.
  • Standard pull: shield if needed → Shadow Word: Pain → wand.
  • The quest hubs closest to your starting zone by level. Check the map – classic quests may have changed.

Checkpoint level 9: Do you have a wand? Can you take three normal mobs in a row without drinking?

Level 10–13: the trainer, your race ability and a better wand

Goal: Wand Specialization 2/2, Mind Blast, your race's first Priest ability, the next wand.

Checkpoint: Can you switch between your emergency button, retreating and the wand on a single target?

Level 14–19: Loch Modan and neighboring zones

Goal: Spirit Tap 5/5 at 16 and a steady chain of kills.

  • Quest where the enemies are around your level. Prioritize actual quest density, not a fixed zone list.
  • Spirit Tap triggers when you kill a non-trivial enemy (and later when a target with your Vampiric Embrace dies).
  • Level 14: Psychic Scream (fears 2 enemies within 8 yd). Level 16: Heal.
  • Level 17–18: longer Shadow Word: Pain.

Checkpoint: Are you drinking after every normal mob? Then you are using too many expensive spells or fighting targets that are too hard.

Level 20–21: new spells and planned pulls

Goal: new trainer abilities and the path to Mind Flay.

Level 22–29: Mind Flay changes the fight

Goal: control how fast the mob reaches you.

  • Level 22: Mind Flay (talent). The client data also lists a higher rank from the trainer at 28.
  • Standard pull against melee: at range → Shadow Word: Pain → Mind Flay while the mob runs at you → wand once it is close or when you want to save mana.
  • If hits break the channel: stop trying to finish every Mind Flay; shield before the pull or switch to the wand.
  • Level 27: Vampiric Embrace – put it on tough targets for extra sustain (healing during the fight).
  • Pull mobs so that Psychic Scream doesn't send enemies into new groups.

Checkpoint: Can you handle two normal enemies in a row without panicking? Do you know when to switch from spells to the wand?

Level 30–34: more tools, higher risk

Goal: more damage without losing safety.

  • Level 30: Divine Spirit from the trainer. Keep your buffs up.
  • Level 32: Shadow Word: Death. Not on reflex: if the target survives, you take 30% of your max health as damage. After a hard pull that can kill you.
  • Level 33–34: Devouring Contagion – the plague spreads when the target dies. Good on controlled packs, but can cause unplanned extra pulls.
  • Against casters: use corners and line of sight (break line of sight behind an obstacle) so that they run to you.

Checkpoint: When the enemy is low on HP – is it safer and cheaper to finish it with the wand than to risk Shadow Word: Death?

Level 35–40: Darkness and choosing a path

Goal: a steady rhythm and the right decision at 40.

  • Level 35–36: Shadow Focus 5/5 gives 25 Shadow points, which Darkness requires.
  • Level 37–40: Darkness 4/5.
  • Level 40 at the trainer: Greater Heal, Lightwell, Mind Blast rank 6, Shadow Word: Death rank 2. The rank levels for your race's Priest abilities are in the race boxes at level 10 and 20.
  • Level 40 without a respec: 2/0/29, Shadowform at 42.
  • Level 40 with a respec: 0/0/31 and Shadowform right away. You lose Wand Specialization; in the form Shadow spells cost 50% less mana, so the rotation becomes more spell-heavy.
  • Dual spec: unlocks at level 40 and is said to cost 10 g (from the pre-release guides, not in the client data – verify at the trainer). A Discipline/Holy spec for dungeons is then an alternative to a respec.
  • Riding: Apprentice Riding at 40 according to Warcraft Tavern. The cost is not in our data – save gold from 30.
  • If you want to heal dungeons in Shadow spec: your basic healing is still there. Tell the group you are in a leveling spec.

Checkpoint: wand DPS, water, trained ranks, potions, gold for riding – and whether you want to spend money on a respec.

Level 41–42: Shadowform

Goal: Darkness 5/5 at 41 and Shadowform at 42. Theory from here on.

Checkpoint: Does a normal mob cost less mana in the form than with the wand loop? If not: more wand shots, fewer spells.

Level 43–47: Mind Blast on cooldown

Goal: Improved Mind Blast 5/5 and Dark Inspiration started.

Level 48–52: Dark Inspiration and Silence

Goal: Dark Inspiration 5/5, Silence at 51.

Level 53–57: Early Demise and Twin Disciplines

Goal: a stable form rotation, Twin Disciplines started.

Level 58–60: final ranks and level 60

Goal: 9/0/42, all important ranks trained, ready for dungeons and raids.

Checkpoint level 60: Do you have Shadowform, the right ranks, a wand above 45 DPS and a plan for a healing spec for raids?

Rotations – rules, not lists

A. Normal melee mob, level 5–21

  1. Power Word: Fortitude active; from 12 also Inner Fire.
  2. Stand so that you have an escape route behind you.
  3. Power Word: Shield if you would otherwise risk interrupted casts or heavy damage.
  4. Shadow Word: Pain if the mob lives long enough.
  5. Smite (or Mind Blast from 10) if the opening damage saves time.
  6. Wand the rest. Stand still so the shots go off.

B. Normal melee mob, level 22–41

  1. Open at range with a spell that suits the mob's HP.
  2. Shadow Word: Pain on targets that will get value from it.
  3. Mind Flay while the enemy is on its way, if you have the mana.
  4. Vampiric Embrace/Devouring Plague on stronger enemies, not on every grey/green mob.
  5. Finish with the wand when more spells don't pay off.

C. Shadowform, level 42–60

  1. Shadowform on, buffs up.
  2. Mind Blast as the opener, then Shadow Word: Pain.
  3. Mind Blast on cooldown, Mind Flay as filler – let the channel finish for Improved Mind Flay and Dark Inspiration.
  4. Shadow Word: Death only as a finisher when the target will definitely die.
  5. Devouring Plague/Vampiric Embrace on tough targets or small packs.
  6. Wand when your mana needs a rest or the mob is almost dead.

Warcraft Tavern has a longer priority list for raids (keep DoTs up, Mind Blast and Shadow Word: Death on cooldown, Mind Flay as filler). Solo, mana economy matters more than maximum damage.

D. Caster mob

  • A caster often does not run at you. Use line of sight around the terrain so that it has to come closer.
  • From 51: Silence interrupts the cast and silences for 5 s.
  • If the enemy's spells hurt too much: pick a different type of mob.

E. Two enemies by accident

  • Shield/heal as needed, but watch your mana.
  • Psychic Scream when fear won't risk pulling more enemies.
  • Kill one enemy quickly, then run or take the other once things are stable.

F. Elite or hard quest

  • Full health and mana, a safe spot.
  • Check whether the target can be feared or slowed before you count on it.
  • If it feels like a gamble: find a group, come back a level later, or skip it.

Keybinds – a suggestion

Key Ability Why
1 Wand / Shoot Used all the time
2 Shadow Word: Pain Standard DoT
3 Mind Blast / Smite Opening damage
4 Mind Flay (from 22) Control and damage
5 Devouring Plague Tougher targets
6 Vampiric Embrace (27+) Sustain
Q Power Word: Shield Quick protection
E Renew Healing under pressure
R Heal/Flash Heal Panic heal
F Psychic Scream Escape
G Silence (51+) Interrupt casters
Shift+F, Shift+Q, Shift+E Your race's abilities See the race box
Shift+3 Shadow Word: Death (32+) Risky execute (finisher)
Shift+4 Shadowform (42+) Enter/leave the form

Put risky spells on Shift and keep Shadow Word: Death far away from Shoot.

Wand macro (test it in Forever):

#showtooltip Shoot
/cast !Shoot

!Shoot stops repeated presses from turning the wand off (a Classic pattern, assumed from Classic). If it doesn't work: drag the wand attack straight to your action bar.

Gear

Early: wand DPS is the top priority. In other slots: Spirit, Intellect, Spell Power and some Stamina. After 42: Shadow damage and spell power matter more as spells do most of the damage.

Decision rules:

  1. If you still have a weak wand (before 42): replace the wand first.
  2. If you drink often despite frugal pulls: more Spirit.
  3. If mobs die slowly despite a good wand: more Spell Power/Shadow damage.
  4. If you are often close to dying: more Stamina, better shield timing, easier enemies.
  5. If you need more mana for elites and healing: more Intellect.

There are no verified stat weights for Forever – hence rules, not numbers.

  • Do dungeons when you have several quests and a decent group. Long trips for an uncertain drop rarely pay off.
  • Consider keeping a healing set (Intellect, Spirit, healing) if you heal often – especially with dual spec from 40.

Professions

Goal Recommendation Comment
Self-sufficiency Tailoring + Enchanting Wands all the way to 55, Shadow gear (BoP) and bags; takes time to skill up
Fastest to 60 Buy wands + two gathering professions Let your guild/the AH handle the crafting
Fewer deaths First Aid Bandages and, in Forever, healing potions (Minor Healing Potion to Major Healing Potion)
Less downtime Cooking In Forever, food that gives Well Fed also gives +5% XP from kills (client data "Well Fed XP Boost", conditional – read the tooltip)

If you pick professions on the site, boxes with profession-specific tips appear in the level plan above.

Camping (new in Forever): at a campfire each profession can place a camp object with a buff (client data). For a Priest, Tailoring's Faction Banner (Spirit) and Herbalism's Incense Candle (Intellect) are the most relevant; Leatherworking's Camp Tent gives rested XP. Exact values are missing from the data.

Tip: sort out the wand question first. Don't give up fun gameplay for ten levels just to optimize a profession.

Zones – a flexible Alliance route

A skeleton, not a minute-optimized route. New quests and Legacy bonuses can change the best path. The 40–60 zones come from Warcraft Tavern and are not play-tested.

Level Areas Check before you go
1–5 Your race's starting zone (see the race box in Level 1–4) Everything in the same quest hub?
5–12 Dun Morogh/Ironforge, Elwynn Forest/Stormwind or Teldrassil/Darnassus Combine trainer visits and the AH
12–20 Loch Modan / Westfall / Darkshore Reasonable level and quests close by?
20–30 Redridge / Wetlands / Duskwood / Ashenvale Avoid elites and dense caster camps solo
30–40 Stranglethorn Vale / Arathi / Desolace / Alterac / Thousand Needles PvP risk, travel, quest density
40–45 Tanaris / The Hinterlands / Shen'dralas / Searing Gorge Shen'dralas's level range is uncertain – verify in game
45–50 Azshara / Felwood / Blasted Lands / Un'Goro Crater Contested zones, elites in Un'Goro
50–55 Burning Steppes / Western Plaguelands / Winterspring / Eastern Plaguelands The Plaguelands are contested – watch out for PvP
55–60 Silithus / Deadwind Pass / Mount Hyjal (60) Hyjal is reached via Winterspring

Measure XP per real minute including travel, drink breaks and deaths. Change zones when the quests thin out.

Risk management

Before every pull: Are there adds (extra enemies nearby)? A clear path behind you? Shield ready? Mana for a heal? Can the wand handle the enemy?

  • Two enemies: control and positioning before damage.
  • The mob is hitting you: shield, heal or fear – don't force Mind Flay through.
  • Low HP: no Shadow Word: Death. In Shadowform: leave the form and heal.
  • Fear in the wrong direction: a fleeing enemy can drag new mobs along.
  • Out of mana: the wand still does damage, but don't start a new pull without mana for a heal.

Small tests that make you faster

When you get a new wand or spell: compare two ways of opening (e.g. Shadow Word: Pain + wand versus more spells) on 6–10 identical mobs. Note the mana left after five kills, drink breaks and the damage you took. Pick whatever works best over many pulls, not on a single enemy.

To be tested after launch

What this guide does not claim

  • It has not been play-tested on live, and 31–60 has not been played even on the beta.
  • It has not shown the best XP/hour compared with other specs.
  • It does not promise that a particular wand, drop or quest is unchanged.

Version history

  • 2.1 (2026-11-05): race boxes for every Priest race (racials, race-specific Priest abilities with rank levels, starting zone and trainers according to Classic data). Gnome-specific text in the body moved into boxes.
  • 2.0 (2026-11-05): extended to level 60: talent order 41–60 (9/0/42), level sections 41–60 with abilities from client data, Shadowform rotation, zones 40–60, raid date, the Legacy talent "Talented". Profession boxes for Tailoring, Enchanting, First Aid, Cooking and Herbalism. The wand table uses the site's corrected DPS and goes up to 55. Corrected Improved Mind Blast 2/5 (−1 s, not −2.5 s).
  • 1.1 (2026-11-05): checked against client data 1.60.1.70755. Corrected Eureka! (applies to damage abilities, not heals), removed an unsupported Vampiric Embrace cooldown, added Expansive Mind and a racial table, confirmed the Shadow Word: Death backlash, corrected levels for Mind Blast (10) and Inner Fire (12), harmonized Gravestone Scepter, dual spec, Well Fed and Camping with the other guides, neutral tone, short version and talent explanations.
  • 1.0 (2026-11-03): first version (ChatGPT), against client build 1.60.1.70707.
