The full guide

Mission: reach level 60 solo as a Human Warlock (Alliance) with as few deaths and drink breaks as possible. You deal the damage with DoTs, your demon takes the hits, and Life Tap turns health into mana. The guide explains both what to do and why.

Version note (November 5, 2026): WoW Forever launched on November 4. The beta had a level cap of 30, so everything above 30 in this guide is theory. Talents and ability levels are checked against client data 1.60.1.70755 (the site's talent, ability, recipe and item data). Pet quests, soul shard costs and zones are not verified on live. See Sources and quality.

Short version

Read this in 60 seconds

  1. Level 1–9: Imp + Immolate/Corruption/Bane of Agony + wand. Get a Lesser Magic Wand at level 5 if you can.
  2. Level 10: get the Voidwalker (class quest), learn Drain Soul and Create Healthstone. The Voidwalker is your tank until at least 30.
  3. Level 10–19: Improved Corruption 5/5 (instant Corruption), then Suppression 5/5 (hit + less threat so the demon holds aggro).
  4. The basic loop: send in the demon → Bane of Agony → Corruption → (Immolate on mobs that live long) → wand → Life Tap when your health is higher than your mana.
  5. Soul shards in Forever: Drain Soul can give a Soul Shard on a single tick against a non-trivial enemy, and always gives one if the enemy dies during the channel. You no longer need to "steal the killing blow" for every shard. Carry 3–5 shards in your bags.
  6. Level 20: Succubus/Incubus (class quest) and Demon Armor. Put talents into Demonology: Unholy Power 5/5 + Demonic Energies 2/2.
  7. Level 30: Drain Life rank 3, Fel Concentration and Improved Drains turn you into a drain tank. The Felhunter (class quest) becomes your answer to caster mobs.
  8. Level 40: 24/7/0 (Affliction/Demonology/Destruction – 31 points in total). Howl of Terror becomes available.
  9. Level 42–60: Death Coil (42) is your new panic button, Malevolence and Shadow Mastery make DoTs and drains stronger, and Wrack (52) is a new channeled Affliction effect.

Three paths – pick the right one for you

Path Talents at 40 Pro Con For you?
A. Affliction with a Demonology dip (main build) 24/7/0 (41/10/0 at 60) Instant DoTs, move between mobs, stronger Voidwalker, drain tanking from 30, no respec Slow against single mobs with little HP Default choice solo
B. Affliction → Demonology respec at 27 approx. 0/31/0 after the respec (or e.g. 5/26/0 if you keep Improved Corruption) Demonic Brand, Demonic Knowledge, Soul Link: a very strong demon Costs a respec, needs more pet management If you like playing "through" the demon
D. Destruction approx. 0/0/31 Burst, Shadowburn gives shards back, Conflagrate Weakest sustain solo according to several sources Duo/dungeons, not solo

Why A: four of the five Forever sources we read (Warcraft Tavern, Method, Conquest Capped, Zockify) recommend Affliction for solo leveling: DoTs keep doing damage while you run to the next mob, and drains heal you during the fight. The Demonology dip at 20–26 comes from Warcraft Tavern: Unholy Power gives your Voidwalker/Succubus +10% damage and Demonic Energies makes the demon heal from your spell damage and gain mana when you use Life Tap. There are no published, controlled 1–60 tests in Forever showing that A is faster than B. Mobalytics (Kargoz) argues that Demonology may be the most efficient – that is still a beta hypothesis.

Why Human suits a Warlock

Racial Effect (client data) What it means for you
The Human Spirit +10% Spirit Life Tap in Forever: "Spirit increases the amount converted". More Spirit = more mana per tap.
Ruthless +1% crit with all spells and attacks A small but constant damage increase; works with Pandemic and Malevolence on DoT crits.
Will to Survive Removes all stuns, 3 min cooldown Break a stun and run. Save it for dangerous situations.
Perception Better stealth detection for 20 s Useful on PvP servers and against stealthed mobs.

How the Warlock works in Forever

The talent tree is not Classic

Forever has its own talent tree. Some important differences from Classic, according to client data 70755:

Your resource is health and mana

Life Tap turns health into mana. Drain Life turns the enemy's health into yours. Demon Skin/Demon Armor give health regen. That means you can often go from mob to mob without sitting down – but only if you don't lose too much health in each fight. The rule: tap when your health is higher than your mana, and make sure the next fight starts with at least ~60% health (a rule of thumb, not a measured number).

The demon is your armor

The Voidwalker takes the hits while you stand at range and let the DoTs tick. This works as long as the demon has aggro. Therefore:

Soul shards – how they work in Forever

This is the biggest quality-of-life change for Warlocks in Forever.

How you get shards

Source What client data 70755 says Practical rule
Drain Soul (level 10) "Non-trivial targets damaged by Drain Soul have a chance to grant you a Soul Shard. Non-trivial targets killed by Drain Soul will always grant you a Soul shard." Channel rank 1 on a mob the demon is tanking. A shard can come on a tick; if the mob dies during the channel it is guaranteed.
Shadowburn (Destruction talent) Gives a shard if the target dies within 8 s and yields XP/honor Only relevant in path D.

Non-trivial means (assumed from Classic) that the mob gives XP – grey mobs give no shards. Conquest Capped and Zockify describe the chance increasing with each tick that didn't give a shard. That is not in the tooltip; verify in game.

What shards cost

Our spell data does not include reagent costs, so the following comes from guides and Classic and must be checked against the tooltip:

Ability Shard cost Source
Summon Imp None (assumed from Classic) Classic
Summon Voidwalker, Summon Succubus, Summon Incubus, Summon Felhunter 1 shard per summon Warcraft Tavern ("A new demon costs a Soul Shard"), Classic
Create Healthstone 1 shard (assumed from Classic) Classic, Method mentions that healthstones are made from shards
Create Soulstone 1 shard (assumed from Classic) Classic
Ritual of Summoning 1 shard (assumed from Classic) Warcraft Tavern lists it among the shard abilities
Soul Fire (level 48) 1 shard, free during Decimation Warcraft Tavern, talent text for Decimation
Death Coil (level 42) Unknown – check the tooltip –

Shard budget per level range

  • 10–19: keep 2–3 shards: one to resummon the Voidwalker after it dies, one for a Minor Healthstone.
  • 20–29: 3–4 shards: switching demons (Voidwalker ↔ Succubus) costs a shard every time. Don't switch demons needlessly.
  • 30–60: 4–6 shards: the Felhunter is added, Create Soulstone before hard quests, a healthstone in reserve.
  • LAN/group: keep at least one extra for Ritual of Summoning. Warcraft Tavern states that meeting stones don't summon players in Forever, so the Warlock is the group's only summon.

Refilling without losing tempo: when the demon is tanking a mob that is going to die anyway, finish it with Drain Soul instead of the wand. You lose a little damage but get a guaranteed shard. Only do this when you are below your budget – each shard takes up a bag slot. Warcraft Tavern states that a shard bag can go in the reagent slot; Soul Pouch is in the recipe data (Tailoring 215). Verify in game.

Conjured items: Create Healthstone, Create Soulstone, Create Firestone and Create Spellstone create items that "disappear if logged out for more than 15 minutes". Make new ones after a longer break – not before.

Demon plan by level

Level Demon How to get it Use when Switch away when
1 Imp Summon Imp (level 1). Warcraft Tavern: class quest at the start; Method: starting quest Early, before the Voidwalker Level 10
10 Voidwalker Summon Voidwalker (level 10) via a class quest in Stormwind Default solo 10–60: tanks, can handle two mobs Rarely – only for specific mob types
20 Succubus/Incubus Summon Succubus/Summon Incubus (level 20) via a class quest Most damage against a single mob; drain tanking from 30 when you can take hits yourself When you get adds or mobs hit too hard
30 Felhunter Summon Felhunter (level 30). Warcraft Tavern names the quest "Seeking Strahad" Caster mobs (Spell Lock), magic debuffs (Devour Magic), PvP servers Against melee camps
50 Infernal Inferno (level 50, 1 h cooldown) Not for leveling according to Warcraft Tavern –

Pet quests for Alliance (assumed from Classic)

The client data confirms that the summon spells come at levels 1, 10, 20 and 30. Which quests are required in Forever is not verified. All sources say "class quest", but no Forever source we have found names the Alliance steps. In Classic it went like this:

  • Voidwalker (10): Gakin the Darkbinder in The Slaughtered Lamb, Stormwind. The chain ends with "The Binding": you use the Bloodstone Choker to summon and defeat a Voidwalker. Method: pick Stormwind or Ironforge, whichever is closer. As a Human that is Stormwind.
  • Succubus (20): also via Gakin; the chain ends with "The Binding" and the Heartswood Core. The Classic route went through Loch Modan/Wetlands – Wetlands is contested. Conquest Capped says the Incubus quest is the easier of the two.
  • Felhunter (30): "Seeking Strahad" (Warcraft Tavern) – in Classic it sent you to Ratchet in The Barrens.

Bloodstone Choker and Heartswood Core exist in the Forever client's item data, which suggests the quests are still there. Verify with the warlock trainer in Stormwind.

Demon abilities (grimoires)

Pet abilities are learned through grimoires from the demon trainer (Warcraft Tavern). Priorities for solo:

The pet ability names are not in the site's spell data and come from the sources/Classic – verify in game. Higher grimoire ranks for 41–60 have not been mapped.

Talent order 10–60 and why

One point per level from 10; 31 points at 40 and 51 at 60. The order is shown in the talent view above and validated by the site.

  • 10–14 Improved Corruption 5/5: Corruption becomes instant (−2 s cast) and +10% damage. The single biggest improvement for an Affliction leveler: two instant DoTs, then the wand.
  • 15–19 Suppression 5/5: +5% hit and −20% threat. Fewer resists on mobs above your level, and the demon loses aggro less often.
  • 20–24 Unholy Power 5/5: +10% damage for all demons. The demon does a large share of your damage.
  • 25–26 Demonic Energies 2/2: the demon is healed for 15% of your spell damage and gets 100% of the mana from Life Tap. Less Health Funnel, a more durable Voidwalker.
  • 27–29 Improved Drains 3/3: +20% on Drain Life/Drain Soul. Preparation for drain tanking at 30.
  • 30–32 Fel Concentration 3/3: 70% chance that drains don't lose channel time when you take damage. Without it drain tanking is frustrating. (Warcraft Tavern takes Amplify Curse here; we prioritize drains because the loop from 30 is built on them.)
  • 33–34 Improved Life Tap 2/2: +20% mana per tap. Works with The Human Spirit.
  • 35–37 Pandemic 3/3: +100% crit damage bonus on DoTs and drains. After level 36 you have 20 Affliction points, which tier 5 (Siphon Life, Soul Siphon) requires.
  • 38 Siphon Life: another healing DoT and another Affliction effect for Soul Siphon.
  • 39–41 Soul Siphon 3/3: +12% drain damage per other Affliction effect on the target (max +36%).
  • 42–46 Malevolence 5/5: +5% crit on Shadow spells. With Pandemic, every DoT and drain crit gets a double bonus. Warcraft Tavern only takes it after 40.
  • 47–51 Shadow Mastery 5/5: +10% damage and health drained on Shadow spells – more Drain Life healing per mana. Requires 25 Affliction points.
  • 52 Wrack: tier 7 (requires 30 points and Siphon Life). Another Affliction effect for Soul Siphon and +10% on your other Shadow DoTs for 6 s. Use it on mobs with lots of health; test whether it beats Drain Life in your loop.
  • 53–54 Nightfall 2/2: 4% chance per Corruption/drain tick that your next Shadow Bolt becomes instant. Free damage when it procs.
  • 55–57 Fel Vitality 3/3: +15% max health and mana for the demon and +15% max mana for you. A sturdy Voidwalker and a bigger mana pool.
  • 58–59 Improved Bane of Agony 2/2: +10% on Bane of Agony, which goes on every mob.
  • 60 Amplify Curse: your next Curse of Weakness/Bane of Agony +50%. Small, but the last point has no better Affliction option.

Talent distribution at 60: 41/10/0 (Affliction 41: Improved Corruption 5, Suppression 5, Improved Drains 3, Fel Concentration 3, Improved Life Tap 2, Pandemic 3, Siphon Life 1, Soul Siphon 3, Malevolence 5, Shadow Mastery 5, Wrack 1, Nightfall 2, Improved Bane of Agony 2, Amplify Curse 1; Demonology 10: Unholy Power 5, Demonic Energies 2, Fel Vitality 3).

Compared with Warcraft Tavern's 40/7/4: the same core (Malevolence, Shadow Mastery, Nightfall). We put the last points into Wrack, Fel Vitality and Bane of Agony instead of Improved Shadow Bolt 4/5, since this build drains rather than casting Shadow Bolt. Neither path has been play-tested to 60.

Legacy points: according to Method and Warcraft Tavern, the Legacy talent "Talented" can give talent points up to 5 levels earlier (full set at 55). If you have it: follow the same order, just earlier. Verify in game.

Optional tweak: Grim Reach 2/2 (+20% range on Affliction spells) instead of Suppression 4–5 if you want to pull from farther away. Soul Harvest (mana regen after a Drain Soul kill) or Demonic Embrace (+Stamina) are reasonable alternatives to Improved Bane of Agony/Amplify Curse – none of them has been shown to be better in Forever.

Level-by-level plan

Level 1–5: Northshire – Imp and three DoTs

Goal: level 5, Imp active, no unnecessary deaths.

Checkpoint level 5: Do you have the Imp and Corruption on your bars? Do mobs die before they reach you?

Level 6–9: Elwynn Forest – the Life Tap loop

Goal: wand, Life Tap and Bane of Agony in a stable loop.

Checkpoint level 9: Can you take three mobs in a row without sitting down? If not: less Shadow Bolt, more wand and Life Tap.

Level 10–13: Voidwalker, Drain Soul and your first talents

Goal: Voidwalker, 2–3 shards in your bags, Improved Corruption under way.

Checkpoint: Does the Voidwalker lose aggro when you DoT? Wait longer before the first DoT, or use Torment.

Level 14–19: Westfall, Loch Modan and Redridge

Goal: instant Corruption at 14, Suppression 5/5 at 19, two mobs at a time.

Checkpoint level 19: Do you have 2–3 shards, a healthstone and a soulstone? Can you take two mobs in a row without sitting down?

Level 20–24: Succubus, Demon Armor and the Demonology dip

Goal: five points in Unholy Power, Demon Armor, Succubus/Incubus available.

Checkpoint: Does the Voidwalker heal itself between fights (Consume Shadows) so you don't need Health Funnel?

Level 25–29: Duskwood and Wetlands – preparing to drain tank

Goal: Demonic Energies 2/2 and Improved Drains 3/3.

Checkpoint level 29: Three points in Improved Drains? Are you using Drain Life when your health is low instead of sitting down?

Level 30–34: Felhunter and drain tanking

Goal: Fel Concentration 3/3, drain tanking as the default on easy mobs, the Felhunter against casters.

Checkpoint: Are you pulling mana-heavy casters? Try the Felhunter against them for an evening and compare time per kill.

Level 35–39: Stranglethorn, Arathi, Desolace

Goal: Pandemic 3/3 and Siphon Life at 38.

Checkpoint: Do you have 4–6 shards? Are you only using Siphon Life on mobs that live long?

Level 40: Howl of Terror, dual spec and Felsteed

  • Howl of Terror (fears up to 5 enemies within 10 yd, 40 s cooldown), Immolate rank 5, Demon Armor rank 3, Curse of the Elements rank 3 and Create Soulstone rank 3, Shadowburn/Conflagrate ranks (only if you have the talents).
  • Talents: 24/7/0 (Affliction 24: Improved Corruption 5, Suppression 5, Improved Drains 3, Fel Concentration 3, Improved Life Tap 2, Pandemic 3, Siphon Life 1, Soul Siphon 2; Demonology 7: Unholy Power 5, Demonic Energies 2).
  • Dual spec: unlocks at level 40 and is said to cost 10 g (from the pre-release guides, not in the client data – verify at the trainer). A way to try path B or D without losing the main build.
  • Mount: Warcraft Tavern mentions a short class quest for the Felsteed and Apprentice Riding at 40. Summon Felsteed is not in the site's spell data – verify at the trainer.
  • Curse of the Elements first on mobs with lots of health (Warcraft Tavern).

Level 41–44: Soul Siphon complete, Malevolence and Death Coil

Goal: Soul Siphon 3/3 at 41, Malevolence started. Theory from here on.

Checkpoint: Are you using Death Coil as a panic button – not as regular damage?

Level 45–49: Shadow Mastery and Soul Fire

Goal: Malevolence 5/5 at 46, Shadow Mastery started.

Level 50–54: Wrack and Nightfall

Goal: Shadow Mastery 5/5 at 51, Wrack at 52, Nightfall 2/2 at 54.

Level 55–60: Fel Vitality and level 60

Goal: 41/10/0, all ranks trained, ready for dungeons and raids.

Checkpoint level 60: 4–6 shards, a healthstone, a soulstone, Death Coil on a key, and a plan for dual spec (Affliction for solo, Destruction/Demonology for raids)?

Rotations – rules, not lists

A. Normal melee mob, 10–29

  1. The demon attacks first.
  2. Bane of Agony → Corruption (instant from 14).
  3. Immolate only if the mob lives long.
  4. Wand the rest.
  5. Life Tap when your health is higher than your mana and no mob is on you.

B. Drain tanking, 30–60

  1. Bane of Agony → Corruption → (Siphon Life from 38, Wrack from 52 on mobs with lots of health).
  2. Let the mob come to you (or let the Succubus fight alongside you).
  3. Drain Life when you need health, wand when you are full.
  4. Life Tap between drains; Fel Concentration keeps the channel from being interrupted.
  5. Shadow Trance (Nightfall, 53+): instant Shadow Bolt.

C. Caster mob

  • Casters don't run at you. Use line of sight (step behind a corner) so they have to come closer.
  • The Felhunter's Spell Lock interrupts casts. Curse of Tongues makes their casts 50% slower.

D. Two or three mobs by accident

E. Elite or hard quest

  • Soulstone on yourself beforehand. Healthstone in your bags. Full mana/health.
  • Check whether the mob is immune to fear.
  • 50/50? Group up or come back a level later.

Gear

Professions

Goal Suggestion Why
Self-sufficient Tailoring + Enchanting Shadow gear (BoP), bags (Linen Reagent Bag at Tailoring 5, Soul Pouch at 215), wands up to 55. Tailoring's camp object Faction Banner gives Spirit (client data) – and Spirit gives more Life Tap.
Fastest to 60 Gathering (Herbalism/Skinning) + buy wands Money and less time in town
Less downtime First Aid + Cooking Bandages and, in Forever, healing potions (Minor Healing Potion to Major Healing Potion) from First Aid – health you can "tap" into mana. Food that gives Well Fed also gives +5% XP from kills (client data "Well Fed XP Boost", conditional – read the tooltip)

If you pick professions on the site, boxes with profession-specific tips appear in the level plan above. Warcraft Tavern names Engineering + Tailoring as the strongest for damage at 60 – that applies to raiding, not leveling.

Camping (new in Forever): at a campfire each profession can place a camp object with a buff (client data). For a Warlock, Tailoring's Faction Banner (Spirit) and Herbalism's Incense Candle (Intellect) are the most relevant; Leatherworking's Camp Tent gives rested XP. Exact values are missing from the data.

Zones – a flexible Alliance route for Humans

This is a skeleton, not a verified speedrun script. The 40–60 zones come from Warcraft Tavern and are not play-tested.

Level Area Why
1–5 Northshire Starting zone
5–10 Elwynn Forest Close to Stormwind and the Voidwalker quest
10–20 Westfall / Loch Modan / Redridge Several Alliance options near Stormwind
20–30 Duskwood / Wetlands / Ashenvale The Succubus quest may go through Wetlands (Classic)
30–40 Stranglethorn / Arathi / Desolace / Hillsbrad The Felhunter quest may send you to Ratchet (Classic)
40–45 Tanaris / The Hinterlands / Shen'dralas / Searing Gorge Shen'dralas's level range is uncertain – verify in game
45–50 Azshara / Felwood / Blasted Lands / Un'Goro Crater Felwood: demons and Felcloth (assumed from Classic)
50–55 Burning Steppes / Western Plaguelands / Winterspring / Eastern Plaguelands Contested – PvP risk
55–60 Silithus / Deadwind Pass / Mount Hyjal (60) Hyjal is reached via Winterspring

Risk management

Before every pull: does the demon have aggro, do you have a healthstone, are there adds behind, is Fear ready?

  • The demon dies: you have a shard to resummon – and a 10 s cast. Fear the mob and summon, or run.
  • Two adds: Fear one, the demon takes one.
  • Stunned: Will to Survive.
  • Low health: Drain Life, healthstone, the Voidwalker's Sacrifice, Death Coil (42+).

To be tested after launch

What the guide does not claim

  • It has not been played on live, and 31–60 has not been played even on the beta.
  • It has not proven that Affliction is faster than Demonology.
  • It does not have a quest-by-quest route.

Version history

  • 2.0 (2026-11-05): extended to level 60: talent order 41–60 (41/10/0), level sections 41–60 with abilities from client data, Death Coil, Wrack, Felsteed/Dreadsteed, zones 40–60, raid date, the Legacy talent "Talented", Warcraft Tavern builds for 60 as alternatives. Profession boxes for Tailoring, Enchanting, First Aid, Cooking and Herbalism. Wand DPS from the site's corrected data.
  • 1.1 (2026-11-05): corrected the talent distribution to 24/7/0 (previously wrongly 31/10/0) and alternative B to approx. 0/31/0. Short version, shared lines on dual spec, Well Fed, Camping and First Aid potions, note on wand DPS.
  • 1.0-research (2026-11-04): first version. Affliction with a Demonology dip, 24/7/0. Talents and ability levels checked against client data 1.60.1.70755.
