Skyborne Druid 1–60: Feral with the bear as your safety margin

Solo leveling for a High Order Skyborne Druid (Alliance) 1–60 as Feral: cat against single mobs, bear when things get dangerous, and a tank-friendly talent path. 0/31/0 at 40 and 0/50/1 at 60 with no respec. Theorycraft – not play-tested on live, and everything above 30 is theory (the beta stopped at 30).

Zephras Isle – range control

Goal: get through the first quests on Zephras Isle without dying.

  • Basic loop: Mark of the Wild on yourself → Wrath at range → another Wrath if the enemy is still far away → finish with your weapon to save mana.
  • Level 4: Moonfire and Rejuvenation. Moonfire while the enemy runs toward you; Rejuvenation heals while you fight.
  • Sit down and eat/drink when your mana is below roughly a third, not after every mob.

Checkpoint: level 5, Moonfire and Rejuvenation learned.

The full guide

Goal: reach level 60 solo as a High Order Skyborne Druid (Alliance) without needless deaths and with as little drinking as possible. You play Feral: caster 1–9, bear 10–19, cat as your default tool from 20, and bear when a pull turns dangerous. After 40 you build toward a druid who can also tank dungeons and raids.

Version note: talents, ability levels and racials are checked against client data 1.60.1.70755 (the site's data). Skyborne class quests, NPCs and the route after Zephras Isle are not known in detail and are marked "verify in game". The beta stopped at level 30 – everything above 30 is theory, and the zone and dungeon levels for 40–60 come from pre-launch guides based on beta data. See Sources and quality.

Horde? Skyborne can also be picked as Windshaper (Horde). The talents and rotation below still apply, but Windshaper has Skysight instead of Read Leyline, and the zone route after the starting zone is completely different. This guide follows the Alliance.

Differences from the Night Elf guide

The foundation is the same as in the Night Elf Druid guide: Feral, Ferocity + Furor 10–19, Feral Swiftness at 20, Leader of the Pack at 30, Shifting Power and Primal Bite at 41–42. The differences:

Skyborne in Forever – racials for a druid

Values from client data 1.60.1.70755 (High Order, Alliance).

Racial What it does Use as a Feral druid
Read Leyline +50% health and mana regen for 15 s, 2 min cooldown. Near a leyline you become "Attuned" for 1 hour and the effect is doubled. Press it when you sit down to heal/drink – shorter breaks. Learn where the leylines are in your questing zones.
Wind Blessed Passive: +2% haste on spells, melee and ranged Slightly faster swings and casts. Nothing you need to think about.
Elemental Insight Passive: +5% damage against elementals Prefer elemental quests when two quests are otherwise equal – there are many in Silithus, Un'Goro and Searing Gorge (assumed from Classic).
Walk on Air Glide downward for 10 s while steering, 90 s cooldown Shortcuts down from high places. Try it at low height first – it is not certain that it protects against all fall damage.

Windshaper (Horde): Skysight (+15% movement speed for 30 s, stronger near an "elemental convergence") replaces Read Leyline. The other three are the same.

How Feral works in Forever

Shapeshifts really cost something

Bear Form, Cat Form and Dire Bear Form cost 55% of base mana according to the client data. Two shifts in the same fight can drain a low-level druid.

  1. Open in caster form only when it saves time (a Wrath + Moonfire before going bear at 10–19).
  2. Shift into the right form once and stay there until the enemy is dead.
  3. Heal in caster form between fights – mid-fight only in an emergency.

Furor 5/5 makes it cheaper: 10 Rage when you enter bear, and the cat gets back its old energy plus 10 Energy per second spent out of form (max 100).

Cat or bear?

  • Cat: one normal mob. You build combo points (points on the target) with Claw/Rake and spend them on a finisher (a closing attack) such as Rip or Ferocious Bite.
  • Bear: 2–3 mobs, elites, casters. More HP and armor; Rage builds from dealing and taking damage.

Shred requires you to stand behind

Shred (20) does the most damage but requires you to stand behind the target. Solo, the enemy is usually facing you, so Claw is the default. In a duo, when someone else has the enemy's attention, Shred – and Shredding Attacks – become worth much more.

Talent order 10–60 and why

One talent point per level from 10; 31 points at 40 and 51 at 60. The order is shown in the talent tree above and validated by the site. The Feral tree holds 50 points in 1.60.1.70755, so the 51st point goes into Restoration.

Legacy: Warcraft Tavern states that the Legacy node Talented (Adventure tree) lets talent points arrive up to 5 levels earlier. If you have it: follow the order below, not the level numbers. Not verified.

10–40

  • 10–14 Ferocity 5/5: Maul, Swipe, Claw, Rake and later Primal Bite cost 5 Rage/Energy less. You live in bear until 20.
  • 15–19 Furor 5/5: 10 Rage on every shift into bear, and a cat that starts with energy after a healing break.
  • 20–21 Feral Swiftness 2/2: +30% speed in cat and +4% dodge. Travel time is leveling time.
  • 22–24 Feral Instinct 3/3: +30% damage with Swipe, and stealth as if you were 3 levels higher. Swipe is your bear's answer to 2–3 mobs, and the stealth bonus makes it easier to sneak past mobs to quest objectives and into Ravage openers from 32. Weak pure solo damage – see the alternatives if you only want to kill single mobs faster.
  • 25–26 Sharpened Claws 2/2: +6% crit in form; prerequisite for Blood Frenzy.
  • 27–28 Savage Fury 2/2: +10% damage on Claw, Rake, Shred, Maul and Swipe; prerequisite for Lacerate.
  • 29 Feral Charge: in bear – charge in, interrupt a cast and root the enemy for 4 s. The answer to casters.
  • 30 Leader of the Pack: +3% crit for you (probably – verify in game) and the party within 45 yards.
  • 31–33 Predatory Strikes 3/3: melee Attack Power in form +150% of your level. A big damage increase in both forms.
  • 34 Lacerate: a bleed that stacks up to 5 times and generates a lot of threat. Good against tough targets and when you tank. The trainer has rank 2 at 34.
  • 35–36 Blood Frenzy 2/2: crits in cat give an extra combo point, crits in bear give 5 extra Rage.
  • 37–39 Shredding Attacks 3/3: Shred costs 18 Energy less and Lacerate 3 Rage less. Worth the most in a duo/group, where you can stand behind the target, and when you tank.
  • 40 Predatory Discipline: Ferocious Bite still deals extra damage from excess energy but no longer consumes it – you can use Bite without draining the cat. Mainly a prerequisite for Shifting Power at 41.

41–60 (theory)

  • 41 Shifting Power: converts mana into the same amount of energy instantly. Cheaper with effects that lower the shapeshift cost. The client data does not say how much ("X Mana") – read the tooltip. Use it when the cat is out of energy and you have mana to spare.
  • 42 Primal Bite: a bear attack for 20 Rage with a 6 s cooldown: 100% weapon damage + 42 and a lot of threat. Rank 2 at 50 and rank 3 at 60 from the trainer. Requires Leader of the Pack. Your best threat button when you tank.
  • 43–44 Natural Instinct 2/2: +20% melee crit damage and more healing from Intellect.
  • 45–49 Rend and Tear 5/5: +10% damage with all melee abilities against bleeding targets. Rake, Rip and Lacerate are bleeds, so it applies in both forms.
  • 50–54 Natural Reaction 5/5: +5% dodge and 5 Rage every time you dodge. More survivability and more Rage when you tank.
  • 55–57 Thick Hide 3/3: more base armor in form (3 per level, more with defense skill). Worth the most in Dire Bear Form, where armor from items is multiplied.
  • 58–59 Brutal Impact 2/2: Bash and Pounce stun for 1 s longer and Bash has a 30 s shorter cooldown – more interrupts against casters.
  • 60 Heart of the Wild 1/5: +2% Intellect, +4% Stamina in bear and +2% Strength in cat. The Feral tree is full, so the last point goes into Restoration.

Validation: row requirements are met at every step (e.g. 20 Feral points before Leader of the Pack at 30, Savage Fury 2/2 before Lacerate, Sharpened Claws 2/2 before Blood Frenzy, Predatory Discipline before Shifting Power, Leader of the Pack before Primal Bite and Predatory Strikes 3/3 before Rend and Tear).

Level 1–5: Zephras Isle – range control

Goal: get through the first quests on Zephras Isle without dying.

  • Basic loop: Mark of the Wild on yourself → Wrath at range → another Wrath if the enemy is still far away → finish with your weapon to save mana.
  • Level 4: Moonfire and Rejuvenation. Moonfire while the enemy runs toward you; Rejuvenation heals while you fight.
  • Sit down and eat/drink when your mana is below roughly a third, not after every mob.

Checkpoint: level 5, Moonfire and Rejuvenation learned.

Level 6–9: the rest of Zephras Isle

Goal: level 10 with the starting zone's quests done.

  • Level 6: Thorns and Wrath rank 2. Thorns on yourself before every pull gives free damage against melee mobs.
  • Level 8: Entangling Roots and Healing Touch rank 2. Root an enemy outdoors to create distance or escape.
  • Pull only one enemy at a time before you have bear – you have no real panic button yet.

Checkpoint: level 10, Hearthstone set, and you know where the trainer is.

Level 10–13: the bear

Goal: Bear Form as soon as you hit 10.

Checkpoint: level 13, Bear Form, Ferocity 4/5.

Level 14–19: Aquatic Form and the first Alliance zone

Goal: level 20 with Furor almost done and Aquatic Form learned.

Checkpoint: level 19, Ferocity 5/5, Furor 4/5, Aquatic Form.

Level 20–24: the cat

Goal: Cat Form, and cat as your default against single mobs.

  • The client data lists Cat Form, Prowl (stealth), Claw, Rip, Shred, Omen of Clarity, Starfire and Rebirth at 20. Whether cat requires a class quest depends on your race – see the race box.
  • Omen of Clarity: a chance that your next ability is free. Keep it active if it is a buff in your spellbook.
  • Cat loop 20–23: Prowl if it saves time → Shred if you are behind, otherwise Claw → Claw up to 4–5 combo points → Rip if the target will live a while, otherwise keep hitting.
  • Level 24: Rake and Ferocious Bite. New loop: Rake → Claw up to 4–5 combo points → Ferocious Bite (or Rip against tough targets).
  • Don't stealth up to every mob – the approach often takes longer than a normal pull.
  • Warcraft Tavern states that druids can learn polearms from 20 (uncertain – ask a weapon master).

Checkpoint: level 24, Cat Form, Feral Swiftness 2/2, Feral Instinct 3/3.

Level 25–29: casters and multiple enemies

Goal: a steady solo pace in cat, with bear as backup.

Checkpoint: level 29, Feral Charge, Savage Fury 2/2.

Level 30–34: Travel Form, Ravage and Lacerate

Goal: faster travel and stronger openers.

Checkpoint: level 34, Leader of the Pack, Predatory Strikes 3/3, Ravage learned.

Level 35–40: Dire Bear and the finished level 40 build

Goal: 31 Feral points, Dire Bear Form, mount and dual spec at 40.

  • Level 36: Frenzied Regeneration (converts Rage into health – your panic button in bear), Pounce (stun from Prowl), Rip rank 3. Talent: Blood Frenzy 2/2.
  • Level 37–39: Shredding Attacks – cheaper Shred and Lacerate.
  • Level 38: Claw and Shred rank 3.
  • Level 40: Dire Bear Form (+120 Attack Power, +600 health, armor from items +360%), Innervate, Feline Grace (less fall damage), Ferocious Bite rank 3, Prowl rank 2, Mark of the Wild rank 5. Talent: Predatory Discipline.
  • Dual spec: unlocks at level 40 at the class trainer (Blizzard, Hearthproof). The price is not published – verify in game with the trainer. Restoration as second spec makes sense if you plan to heal dungeons.
  • Mount: Apprentice Riding at 40. Warcraft Tavern gives 100 g for the training and 20 g for the mount; Method and Kami Labs count on about 100 g in total. Save at least 120 g and verify the price in game. The mount (60%) is faster than Travel Form (40%).

Checkpoint: level 40, 0/31/0, Dire Bear Form, mount.

Level 41–44: Shifting Power, Primal Bite and Barkskin

Goal: both Feral capstones and Barkskin before you head into the level 45 zones. Everything from here on is theory – the beta stopped at 30.

  • Level 41: the Shifting Power talent. Use it in the middle of a long cat fight when your energy runs out – not as a replacement for a healing break.
  • Level 42: the Primal Bite talent. Trainer: Lacerate rank 3, Maul rank 5, Ravage rank 2, Demoralizing Roar rank 4, Faerie Fire rank 3, Regrowth rank 6, Starfire rank 4.
  • Bear loop from 42: Primal Bite when it is ready → Lacerate up to 3–5 stacks on tough targets → Maul with leftover Rage → Swipe against multiple mobs.
  • Level 44: Barkskin (−20% physical damage for 15 s, 1 min cooldown), Rake rank 3, Rip rank 4, Swipe rank 4, Thorns rank 5, Healing Touch rank 8. Whether Barkskin can be used in form is not verified – in Classic it could not.
  • Zones (pre-launch guides, beta data): Tanaris, Feralas, The Hinterlands and Badlands. Forever's new Riverglades (up to about 44) and Shen'dralas (40) are listed by Warcraft Tavern and Hearthproof but have no described quest route.
  • Dungeons: Uldaman (41–51), Zul'Farrak (44–54) and the new Krol'dok Stronghold (40–45, bosses not published) according to Hearthproof. Good chances to practise bear tanking.

Checkpoint: level 44, Shifting Power, Primal Bite, Barkskin and Natural Instinct 2/2.

Level 45–49: Rend and Tear and Un'Goro

Goal: Rend and Tear 5/5 and a steady questing pace in the 45–50 zones.

Checkpoint: level 49, Rend and Tear 5/5, mount, and you know when to use Barkskin.

Level 50–54: Gift of the Wild and the tank package

Goal: Natural Reaction 5/5 and the next rank of every core ability.

Checkpoint: level 54, Gift of the Wild, Natural Reaction 5/5, Primal Bite rank 2.

Level 55–60: the finished build and raid launch

Goal: level 60 with 0/50/1, gear for dungeons and a plan for the raids on 9 December.

Checkpoint: level 60, 0/50/1, Primal Bite rank 3, dungeon gear and a chosen raid role.

Combat decision table

Situation Do this Why
1 normal mob Cat: Rake → Claw → Ferocious Bite Fastest kill
2–3 mobs Bear: Demoralizing Roar + Swipe Armor, Rage and damage on all of them
Caster Bear + Feral Charge, then Bash Interrupts and roots
Tough mob or elite Bear: Primal Bite (42+), Lacerate stacks + Maul Safe and lots of threat
Low HP mid-fight Bear: Frenzied Regeneration (36+), Barkskin (44+, if usable in form); otherwise Entangling Roots and heal in caster form Avoid a corpse run
Cat out of energy, mana left Shifting Power (41+) Instant energy without a shapeshift
Break after a fight Sit down and heal/drink Fewer breaks than after every mob
Long run Cat with Feral Swiftness, Dash (26+), Travel Form (30+), mount (40+) Travel time
Underwater Aquatic Form Breathing and speed

Keybinds – suggestion

Key Cat Bear
1 Claw Maul
2 Rake Lacerate
3 Ferocious Bite / Rip Swipe
4 Shred Demoralizing Roar
5 Shifting Power Primal Bite
R – Feral Charge / Bash
Q / E Cat Form / Dire Bear Form
F Healing Touch / Regrowth (leaves form)
Shift+Q Travel Form
Shift+E Prowl
Shift+R Racial: Read Leyline, Elune's Light or War Stomp

The druid's action bar swaps buttons automatically between forms, so the same key can hold a different ability in cat and bear.

Gear

  • Leather with Agility, Strength and Stamina. Cat Form gives Attack Power equal to 12 plus your Agility (client data), so Agility is worth a lot in cat. The sources disagree on whether Strength or Agility is best – compare Attack Power in the tooltip while in form.
  • Bear: Stamina and armor. Dire Bear Form multiplies armor from items by 360%, so armor on leather is worth more than it looks.
  • Weapon: Warcraft Tavern states that Feral attacks scale with weapon damage in Forever. Not verified; upgrade your weapon when it is cheap. Two-handed staves such as Ironshod Bludgeon (37.2 DPS, level 37) and Enchanted Azsharite Felbane Staff (46.7 DPS) are mentioned by Hearthproof.
  • Intellect/Spirit: a little helps with the shapeshift cost and Shifting Power, but don't trade away big Feral stats for it.
  • Consumables: Minor Mana Potion (level 5), Mana Potion (22), Superior Mana Potion (41) and Major Mana Potion (49) as an emergency reserve; Hearthproof states that mana potions work in form.
  • Don't buy expensive AH items that get replaced within a few levels. Save for training and your mount.

Professions

No professions are required for the build. The boxes in the level sections only show the professions you have selected. Recommendation:

  • Skinning + Leatherworking (main choice): your own BoP gear all the way – the Brawler's set 12–25, the Prowler's/Warden's set 40–50 and Forever pieces such as Warbear Helm and Outlaw's Collar at 56–60. Skinning gives you leather along the route.
  • Herbalism + Alchemy (alternative): mana, rage and elixir potions. Check whether gathering forces you out of form.
  • Enchanting (alternative): your own idols (Mystic Mushroom 20, Talons of Wrath 40, Idol of the Dream 55) and Agility enchants.
  • First Aid: bandages, and in Forever also healing potions (Minor Healing Potion to Major Healing Potion) – not Alchemy.
  • Cooking: Well Fed also gives +5% XP from kills in Forever (client data "Well Fed XP Boost", conditional – read the tooltip).
  • Camping (new in Forever): at a campfire, each profession can place a camp object with a buff (client data). For a Feral druid: Leatherworking's Camp Tent (rested XP), Skinning's Camp Chair (crit) or Mining's Lodestone (melee AP). Higher skill unlocks more camp objects (e.g. Tanning Rack, Trapper's Workbench); their effects are missing from the data.

Zones – a flexible Alliance route

The zones after Zephras Isle are not a tested Forever route. 1–40 is assumed from Classic; 40–60 comes from Warcraft Tavern and Hearthproof (beta data). Adjust based on quest color (yellow/green = good).

Level Areas
1–12 Zephras Isle
12–20 Loch Modan, Westfall or Darkshore
20–30 Redridge Mountains, Duskwood, Wetlands or Ashenvale
30–40 Stranglethorn Vale, Arathi Highlands, Desolace, the Alterac areas, Dustwallow Marsh
40–45 Tanaris, Feralas, The Hinterlands, Badlands, Riverglades, Shen'dralas
45–50 Searing Gorge, Azshara, Felwood, Blasted Lands, Un'Goro Crater
50–55 Burning Steppes, Western and Eastern Plaguelands, Winterspring
55–60 Silithus, Deadwind Pass, Mount Hyjal (60)

Duo with a Gnome Priest

Only applies if you are on the same faction – a High Order Skyborne (Alliance) can group with a Gnome Priest.

  • The druid: makes controlled pulls, tanks in bear on hard pulls and plays cat against easy mobs – now Shred can be used from behind.
  • The priest: deals damage with DoTs and wand, heals when needed and avoids wasting mana on unnecessary healing.
  • Together: 1–2 enemies at a time, the bear takes dangerous pulls, interrupt casters with Feral Charge/Bash.
  • Do group quests together, but don't hunt single mobs together if you each get more XP on your own.
  • 40–60: the duo is a ready-made dungeon core – the druid tanks, the priest heals. Uldaman and Zul'Farrak are good first picks.

Risk management

  • Mana is your lifeline. Never start a new pull in form with less mana than a shift back to caster plus one heal.
  • Caves: pull one at a time, use bear.
  • Abort a pull when a third mob joins and you are below half HP without Frenzied Regeneration.
  • Elites you can neither sneak past nor handle in bear: skip them or find a group.
  • 45–60: mobs in Un'Goro, Felwood and the Plaguelands stand closer together (assumed from Classic). Pull with Faerie Fire or from stealth, not by running in.

None of the pre-launch guides has a finished Feral build for 41–60 (Icy Veins and Mobalytics could not be read; Warcraft Tavern and Method write that level 60 builds will come after launch). The 41–60 order is therefore derived from the talent data. The 1–40 zone route is Classic knowledge. No XP/hour figures exist.

To test after launch

  • The talent order can be clicked in the live client, including 41–60.
  • How Skyborne druids get Bear Form, Aquatic Form and Cat Form – trainer or class quest, and where?
  • When you leave Zephras Isle and where the boat/flight goes.
  • Read Leyline: where the leylines are and how often "Attuned" can be gained.
  • Walk on Air and fall damage.
